World Space Week - 2025

World Space Week, an annual, global space event, celebrates the contributions of space science and technology to humanity. With the theme “Living in Space” WSW-2025 is set to educate, inspire and connect global community, focusing on humanity’s strides in developing sustainable living solutions for space.

This year’s WSW celebrations at URSC, held from October 4-10, 2025, included a series of activities to engage the community, particularly students, and inspire curiosity and awareness about space.

The following educational and outreach activities were designed to spark interest in STEM, encourage students to pursue careers in fields related to space and educate people about the benefits from space research.

  • Day-long Interaction of student community with eminent speakers from the centre at 10 venues across Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Maharashtra.
  • An hour-long Space Quiz program on All India Radio (AIR, FM 101.3 MHz) on each day, during 04-09 Oct, 2025. Talks by our senior executives including introductory talk by our Director
  • Active display of space science & technology concepts through ‘Space on Wheels Exhibition Bus’ at Ooty and Coorg
  • Live demonstration of satellite communication techniques using the wonderful scientific hobby of HAM Radio

Inaugural Session – October 4, 2025

World Space week celebrations began at URSC on 4th October 2025 with an inaugural function which was attended by 150 students from different schools and colleges of Karnataka.

Sri Belgaonkar P V, Chairperson,WSW-2025 Committee welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of World space week. He briefed about the various activities planned by URSC for celebrating WSW.

Director Shri Sankaran M in his presidential address talked about "Living in Space," highlighting its growing relevance and challenges. He emphasized the need for study of aspects related into life-support systems, space habitats, and human adaptability beyond Earth.

Chief Guest Prof. G C Anupama, former Dean, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, delivered an inspiring talk, tracing the evolution of the world and igniting curiosity about the cosmos. Her insights into stargazing left students eager to explore the universe further.

HAM Radio event was also conducted in which reception of images from Satellites were demonstrated.

Outreach Program – Visits to Educational Institutions

To ensure wider outreach for space activities and impart awareness about space technology to the student community in Karnataka and neighbouring states, four sub-committees were constituted. These 4 teams visited 10 institutions.

About 12000 students and 400 teachers from more than 250 schools participated in the outreach program.

Institution Visits and Student Interactions:

Each team visited two or three institutions within their designated zones and conducted interactive sessions that included popular science talks and technical presentations by eminent speakers from ISRO/URSC and Q&A session.

Space Exhibition:

Various space craft and rocket models were exhibited and the team members effectively explained space concepts to students and visitors through these exhibits.

Competitions:

Various competitions like Quiz, Memory, Elocution and Painting were conducted with space as theme and the winners were awarded with certificates and science books.

AIR Program

wsw25 photo World Space Week event was conducted in collaboration with FM Rainbow 101.3 MHz radio station to reach general public. The radio channel through its wide listener-ship base (nearly 23 million), has given a wide outreach to share knowledge on space technology. Talks by our senior executives including introductory talk by our Director was aired followed by Space Quiz. The Radio Quiz program has received very good response from the listener community with hundreds of responses every day during the week .

Introductory talk was by Director, URSC Shri. M Sankaran on 4th Oct 2025, on the theme ‘Living in Space’. He briefed about the need for living in space, India’s plans towards achieving this goal and he challenges faced while living in space.
The inaugural talk was followed by talks by eminent speakers of URSC :
  • Sri Ramanagouda Nadagouda, AD, Projects : Living in space – possibility and challenges
  • Sri Sudhakar S, DD,CDA : How to control large structures required for living spaces/stations to facilitate living in space
  • Smt Chaitra Rao , Project Director, NISAR : Recreation and Entertainment if you start living in space.
  • Dr. Aravind Kumar, Chief Medical officer: Taking care of Human Health while living in Space
  • Shri. Madhusudana, GD, PPEG : Infrastructure required for testing on ground to prepare humans to live in space

The space quiz questions related to space science, technology, space scientists, etc. were posed to audiences during the 1-hour programs during 04-10 Oct. Correct answer (two members answering first) for each question were awarded with a memento. The questions were generated by the AIR program committee led by Sri N S Murali. Photo frames with Chandrayaan-3 lander photo were given as mementos to the winners.

The program got concluded on Oct 10, 2025 with a brief talk by Shri.Belgaonkar P V, DD,ICA & Chairman, WSW-2025 committee. He briefed about the Special tests required to prepare humans to live in space.

HAM Radio

wsw25 photo HAM Radio event was also conducted in which reception of images from satellites were demonstrated during both inauguration and Valedictory function. Upagrah Amateur Radio Club, URSC Celebrated the World Space Week with Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium . Hundreds of visitors immensely enjoyed the demonstrations pertaining to space-based Ham Radio as well as reception of weather images from Geostationary, Meteorological Satellites. The club received appreciation from Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium for conducting the demonstrations.

Valedictory Function

wsw25 photo World Space week celebrations at URSC concluded on 10th October 2025 with a valedictory function which was attended by 300 students from different colleges of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu.

Sri Belgaonkar P V, Chairperson,WSW-2025 Committee welcomed everyone and provided a brief report on the activities conducted as part of WSW-2025.

A video titled Glimpses of WSW-2025 was streamed, which beautifully captured all the activities of WSW-2025 including the outreach events at 10 venues, AIR and HAM radio events.

Our director Shri Sankaran M in his presidential address talked about "Living in Space," highlighting its growing relevance and challenges. Chief Guest Prof.Tarun Souradeep, Director, delivered an inspiring talk on relevance of space and importance of science. Director and Chief Guest made the session interactive by answering the questions from audience.

Conclusion

The World Space Week outreach activities were conducted successfully. Teams reached-out to about 12500 students at various host institutions, hundreds of students through live HAM Radio program and millions through the AIR program. The outreach activities of World Space Week celebrations have received overwhelming responses across various schools, with enthusiastic student participation at every event. Their curiosity and excitement reflect a strong interest in space science and exploration. The efforts put-forth by Organising committee towards successful conduct of all events received wide spread appreciations by everyone.
