NSD-2017: Summary

U R Rao Satellite Centre celebrated National Science Day on 28th February. The day began with inauguration of events with lighting the lamp by Director, URSC. In the morning two scientific competitions - Science Quiz and Spot Painting were conducted simultaneously at two different venues. The students and teachers from various schools visited the space exhibition which had displays of various satellite models right from Aryabhata to Mars Orbiter Mission and exhibits related to space and satellite technology.

As part of the national science day celebrations, seven events were held for students from first to tenth standard classifying them as category A, B and C. The theme of this year's science day was "Science and technology for specially abled persons"?.

A special event was conducted for teachers also. Around 40 school teachers and students from Bengaluru participated in the events.

Essay writing attracted about 120 students who were keen to express their ideas on the chosen scientific topics in Kannada, Hindi and English. Dr. K. Kasturirangan special prize was awarded to the nsd17best essay among the three languages for each of the two categories B and C.

Test of Scientific Temper was an event held to test the answering ability of students of category C to questions related to normal day-to-day happenings around them. About 50 students participated.

Because teachers have a major role in cultivating the interest in students towards science and future living, Teachers' Event was conducted on "Use of Science and Technology for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan", during which about 12 teachers came out with innovative ideas to motivate the student community.

Extempore Science Elocution which tested the eloquence and ability of students to express scientific ideas was another attraction for category B and C students. About 50 students participated.

Science in Action was an interesting event in which various experiments were demonstrated to the students and the underlying principle was sought. This event was aimed to expose the students to science, with the help of practical experiments and develop basic understanding of science and their applications. This event was held for category B and C students where in about 60 students participated.

Innovative ideas contest was held to bring out, based on the theme, scientific/technological innovations for specially-abled viz., "Making homes friendly for visually challenged through technology" for category B and "Specially-abled person's self-reliance through technology in school" for category C. It attracted the registration about 112 students. Science quiz was held in two phases. Teams short-listed during the first phase of written test were allowed compete for the final prize.

Spot painting saw lot of colorful creations from our budding artists from category A on Nature and B on the theme S&T for specially abled persons

Besides these events, to ignite young minds, Mobile Science Exhibition from M/s Agastya International Foundation, was arranged inside the campus for the school students to understand the Science concepts through simple experiments. School students & Teachers got interested in the various scientific experiments kept for display.This was a new attraction introduced this year

Mobile Planetarium from M/s Varnaaz Technologies was arranged for the students and as many as 450 students witnessed the astronomy and scientific events and felt thrilled.

The valedictory function was conducted on 28th Feb, 2017 which started with a melodious invocation song followed by welcome address by Sri Basavaraj S Akkimaradi, Chairman, NSD-2017. Dr P.Subba Rao gave an insight into the life and achievements of Sir CV Raman in whose honour the event is celebrated. Dr. M Annadurai, Director URSC presided over the function. The Chief Guest for the occasion, Prof. Subrahmanyan Ravi, Director, Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, delivered the invited lecture titled "A journey to the far side of the Moon"? . The talk was highly inspirational for students.

The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes for winners by the Director and chief guest. On the whole, the events and competitions were well organized by the Conveners and Members of the organizing committee, NSD-2017.
