NSD-2026: Summary

nsd-img National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated throughout the country on 28th February every year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V. Raman in the year 1928. This celebration is aimed at spreading a message about the importance of science in our lives and encouraging a scientific mindset among the youth in the country.


The theme for NSD-2026 is “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat.”


URSC has been celebrating National Science Day every year by organizing events, competitions, and programs for school students and teachers. This year too, an elaborate plan was made to conduct the events. A brochure containing details of all events was circulated to schools across the region. Around 1028 online registrations were received from 66 schools across Karnataka and neighbouring states, reflecting a strong interest in scientific exploration. There were total 1005 participants with 851 being students and 154 being teachers.


Participant Categorization

Students were categorized as follows:


  • Category A: Class I to IV
  • Category B: Class V to VII
  • Category C: Class VIII to X

Valedictory Programme

The NSD-2026 celebrations concluded with a grand valedictory programme held on 28th February 2026 at URSC. The event saw the active participation of around 450 students (including 103 winners) with about 50 accompanying teachers from different schools across the region.


The ceremony was graced by distinguished scientists:

Chief Guest: Prof. Ajit Parameswaran from the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR), delivered an inspiring keynote address on “Astronomy’s New Messengers” that motivated students to pursue fundamental research and scientific excellence.


Guest of Honour: Prof. Sivarani Thirupathi from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), shared her perspectives on the evolving role of women who shaped modern astronomy in her talk on “Stellar Fingerprints to New Worlds.”


During the programme, 103 winners from various competitions were felicitated with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Consolation prizes.


NSD-2026 was celebrated in a grand manner with the active involvement of the organizing committee, students, and teachers. Organizing Committee, NSD-2026, URSC, would like to thank all the schools, students, and teachers for their enthusiastic participation and for making this celebration a resounding success.
